Medical Marijuana as Treatment for Cancer |
Cancer, cancer therapies and their side effects may cause a variety of problems for cancer patients. Some anti cancer drugs cause nausea and vomiting. Medical Marijuana has been used to treat chemo therapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients.
Two forms of Marijuana have been used. Marijuana in its natural form (taken orally or smoked/vaporized) and Marinol, a synthetic form of the active Marijuana constituent delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) available by prescription. Marinol
was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of cancer patients who had not responded well to antiemetic drugs.
Research has shown that the natural form of Marijuana vaporized is more quickly absorbed than taken orally or in prescription form, thus relieving patients of their symptoms faster.
Anorexia and Cachexia
Anorexia is the loss of appetite or desire to eat. It is the most common symptom of cancer patients.
Cachexia is a wasting condition in which the patient experiences weakness and rapid decrease of weight loss, muscle and fat. Anorexia and Cachexia usually occur together. Marijuana is an appetite stimulant. This is another great reason why cancer patients choose this as their alterative medicine.
Smoking Medical Marijuana can be harmful to the respiratory system, especially if not organically grown (it may contain harmful toxins). Consider these methods instead; vaporization, topical, and edible form.
