Medical Marijuana as Treatment for Chronic Back Pain: Degenerative Disc Disease |
Degenerative Disc Disease ia one of the most common causes of chronic lower back pain and often the most misunderstood. The exact cause of this severe condition is unknown. It is thought that it is due to abnormal micro motion in the degenerated
disc that spurs an inflammatory reaction and sometimes causes muscle spasms. In addition to lower back pain, there can be
leg pain, numbness and tingling. The level and extent of pain does not equal tissue damage; severely degenerative discs may
not produce much pain, and discs with little degeneration can produce severe pain.
This condition is normally treated with opioids (such as vicodin and percocet), muscle relaxers, anti-depressants, steroid injection, and other over the counter and prescription medications, most of which can have severe adverse side effects and addiction. A patient may easily build a tolerance for the medications as well. Medical Marijuana’s analgesics (pain relieving ability) may help with nerve pain and overall pain of the lower back and legs. THC (Marijuana’s primary active ingredient)
also has significant beneficial effects on muscle spacisity.
Smoking medical marijuana can be harmful to the respiratory system, especially if not organically grown (it may contain
harmful toxins). Consider these methods instead; vaporization, topical, and edible form. If
you suffer from chronic back pain and/or Degenerative Disc Disease and are interested in a natural alternative, please call our office today at 877.229.4201 for more information and/or to schedule and appointment with one of our Physicians. Or, simply fill out our
